Bug Description

Binary package hint: gparted

My hard disk is not detected by the gparted both in the LIVE CD mode of ubuntu 8.04 LTS(hardy heron) 64 bit & also while installing from it.Strangely enough....Feisty Fawn is quite happy with my hard disk(the same one) & i am absolutely satisfied with its performance in every aspect.its very sad that i cant install hardy heron on my machine.(both "install into windows" & fresh installation modes failed, all of them proceed to partition editor stage,& in that stage....the whole workspace(or the partition editor window) is blank with every button(such as new partition, edit partition)is disabled). When i run hardy in the live cd mode....gparted can not detect any device.
my hard disk is SAMSUNG SP0802N,processor is AMD Athlon 64 bit with 2.00 GHz speed, motherboard is ASUS M2N-MX.I am really surprized to see that feisty is working beautifully with this very hard disk ,but hardy cant detect it.Also, this is the first time i had a problem installing ubuntu since bridgy(i skipped only edgy & gutsy in between).I need help on these & also i need to know what exactly do i need to send.i can send feisty's fstab file, but will it be of any use?plz help quickly.

You have an Nvidia Southbridge. The problem seems to be your IDE/SATA controller... Can you tell me the output of lspci and lsmod? Also dmesg...
Also, just to clarify: You don't want to upgrade feisty, right?

the hardy livecd does not include the restricted nvidia driver.

when you boot with the livecd, you have to run the "restricted drivers manager" and download & enable the drivers it will propose... then start anew the installation procedure

the module needed for your harddisk is sata_nv, which is not in restricted modules, I was wrong.
So in hardy, can you try "sudo modprobe sata_nv"?
Also, the dmesg & lsmod output we need is from hardy, to see what is wrong. Your outputs from feisty look alright...

Try booting with the noapic kernel option...

To do this, at the livecd boot menu press F6 (other options), and at the line starting with "kernel" go to the end and add the word "noapic".

Tell me how it went

Your ide controller appears in lspci. You seem to have libata loaded, but I think it needs pata_amd.
Can you try "sudo modprobe pata_amd" and tell me if that changes anything?

No, scd0 is your cd-rom. I don't know why you're getting these error messages.

Can you give me the output of "lspci -nn"?
And, have you tested the ubuntu livecd to see there's nothing wrong with it?

Hi Bullet,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 244375

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
This bug remained an issue with hardy....but with intrepid onwards.....it is
no longer there...as i've already mentioned that feisty( & all previous ones
starting from bridgy ) was doing fine with my hard disk.....& so is intrepid
& jaunty....only hardy failed to recognize the same hard disk of mine....( i
have not tested gutsy)....the reason is still beyond me...But since right
now i am using intrepid,i no longer has any problem regarding this bug.
Thanking you,
