In Kubuntu Hardy, closed applications remain on the Taskbar

Bug Description

Kubuntu Hardy, using KDE 3.5.9. Sometimes the entry of an application remains on the Taskbar after the application has been closed. Happens not only with applications, but with dialogs (today with a Kopete error dialog) too. After a few minutes, the entry disappears.

I would gladly provide more information, but it seems completely random. It did not happen under Gutsy. I am not using Compiz.

Please let me know if more information is needed (HW, logs).

The same is happening to me with ubuntu 8.04. It is only since recent updates, as far as I can remember. The applets closed along with the application previously. Only noticed this happening as of yesterday, 17th July, 2008.

There were no changes to kdebase on 2008-07-17. In fact there haven't been any for a long time before either.

Does this issue still appear with KDE 3.5.10? It is available in the hardy-backports repository.

Yeah, it's still in 3.5.10. In fact, I mistakenly thought it to be related to the kicker-taskbar-compiz, because I do use compiz. see link:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kicker-taskbar-compiz/+bug/261694

But it isn't. I have done some layman research and these are my conclusions:

1. When I have Autohide disabled in the taskbar settings, the problem doesn't occur. Ever.
2. When I lock and unlock the panel, the leftovers disappear, but it
start again after i close a window or two.
3. It doesn't happen for all windows, but I couldn't find out any
predictability in which are and which are not influenced.
4. When a window is closed, all items to the right of that window slide one position to the left. The former location of the rightmost window doesn't get overwritten, so it stays visible.
5. If I close a window by rightclicking it on the taskbar and then choosing close, the problem also doesn't occur. But I haven't tried it often enough to say "Ever" like in 1.

Conclusion:
So it seems to me that the redraw event doens't take place when the taskbar is hidden while closing a window.

I hope this can be resolved.

Some additional information:

- Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 3.5.10
- Compiz enabled
- Active Applets: KBFX Sphinx, System Menu, 4 x Quickbrowser, System Tray, Clock, Logon/Logoff buttons, Media
- Active Application shortcuts: Firefox, Thunderbird

Maybe it helps..

I think I solved it. AdamK from forum.compiz-fusion.org suggested to add the line

Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true"

to the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Haven't seen the problem occurring once since then.

Well, since the first poster doesn't use compiz, it cannot be a compiz bug. The bug seems to be caused by a recent update of the nvidia proprietary driver in combination with compositing on X (not necessarily with compiz).

Googling "UseCompositeWrapper" results in a wide range of problems, of which most are but some aren't related to compiz.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Personally I would say: closed, because I don't use Kde 3.5.x anymore (8.10
and higher come with KDE 4 with another implementation of the taskbar), and
the KDE 4 taskbar behaves fine. For Hardy users, this might still be an
issue, but I cannot test this.
