Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

When I try to open a link from a conversation window, it opens in Opera (as it should), but when I pick "Open Hotmail Inbox" from the Accounts submenu, it opens in Firefox, so it seems that the option is hard-coded.

Thank you for reporting this issue and trying to make Ubuntu better.

Just so I am clear, have you changed the default browser under: Tools -> Preferences -> Network -> Configure Browser and it still opens firefox when checking your hotmail under the accounts submenu?

Thanks,

Richard Seguin

Yes, when I go to Tools>Preferences>Network>Configure Browser it launches gnome-default-applications-properties and Opera is selected as the default browser. And yes, even after that, Pidgin opens Firefox when checking Hotmail under the Accounts submenu.

GNOME still has issues handling browser-related files (for example, even after selecting Opera as the default browser, it keeps opening htm, html and xml files in Firefox), so maybe this one is part of such issues ---with the disadvantage that in this particular case it's not possible to just modify the "Open with" section for a file in Nautilus.

I tried both aMSN and emesene, to check for a similar behavior: aMSN doesn't depend on GNOME defaults, and therefore it works correctly when the browser string is set to "opera $url". emesene, on the other hand, aims to integrate with GNOME, and as a result it behaves in a similar way to Pidgin when trying to open Hotmail (i.e., uses Firefox, even if the default browser is set to Opera).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Although I don't use pidgin anymore (decided to stick to aMSN), both
emesene and pidgin seem to be working correctly now. Thank you!

it's my first report here.

the msn accounts problem still happens. With msn/hotmail when clicking in "open mail" pidgin (or ubuntu) opens firefox when opera (or other) is selected as default browser.
Other IM accounts work fine. Other apps in ubuntu work fine.

I've tested in both 8.04 and 8.10 pc, with the pidgin package from repositories (the last one for this distributions).

It's not a big problem but a little bit annoying
