Bug Description

I just tried the Hardy LiveCD. After selecting Norwegian, I have several problems.

The most important one is that å is not displayed properly. The ring is not round, but cut off. This problem does not exist in any other Linux distro I have ever tried. This letter is a part of the normal Norwegian alphabet.

Second, only 2 out of 7 text strings on the initial desktop are translated, and the two that are, are translated poorly. "Install", is translated into "Installér" instead of "Installer", and the date format uses a format of two letters for the day, which is correct, but not used in practice. The normal way is three letters.

Third, the installer starts with English, and then loads the Norwegian translations, causing a flicker. It should load the correct translation at once.

Fourth, the spelling checker for Firefox is set to English, effectively marking all valid Norwegian words (and even some English ones) with a red underline. Locale settings should be effective for all applications.

The help (blue question mark button on the top panel) is a mixture of Norwegian and English.

Most strings are not translated at all (will this be better after I install to disk?). Ironically, "Language Support" is one of them. Even within applications (like "About Gnome"), some strings are translated, but most are not.

Some of the strings that are translated, are translated so poorly that I'm not able to guess the original meaning. An example is the "Panel program for hampering" (translated back from Norwegian). The translation "Desktop line" (also from the panel applets) means nothing, but the description tells me what it is.

Spelling error: The string "CD/DVD brenner" in the GNOME menu should be "CD/DVD-brenner".

1. That confuses me: the å in your post shows up fine in Kubuntu. Does this depend upon the font that text is in?

For the various spelling errors, lack of translated strings, we can only apologise. It relies upon volunteers, and the Norwegian translation is not complete. If you would like to help, please visit: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy

I will leave this as a bug against the installer (I think I've got the right package)--as you say, it should ideally load the correct translations immediately.

You may wish to file (if no-one else already has) a bug about firefox localisation, against firefox.

The å shows up fine in large print, but with the standard GTK font
size (like in the installer, the help, Firefox, and so on) the ring is
not a ring, but a half ring.
If I remember correctly, the å showed up fine in Courier, but when I
typed it in the font was something similar to DejaVu Sans (or whatever
the default sans serif font is), and it did not show up correctly.

I'd appreciate it if you could file the separate issues as separate bugs; it makes them *much* easier to track. Reporting all your issues in one bug report may seem convenient at first, but it often makes developers less likely to work on it due to the pain of keeping track of which bits have been fixed ...

This should not longer be a problem in the latest release, can you confirm if it is still there?
