since upgrade some flv playback is choppy

Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

this same flv video played smooth in 7.10, but in the 8.04 upgrade, it plays back at about 4-5 frames per second. Probably a codec problem since many other video files still play just fine.

This is playing on a Dell Inspiron 1521 which uses the ATI fglx graphics driver

thank you for your bug report, could you try playing this file using gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///directory/to/example? does it has the same issue?

Plays back very nicely with that command line:

$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin "uri=file://`pwd`/Scott Henderson - Mr PC.flv"
Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...
E: socket-client.c: socket(): Address family not supported by protocol
Pipeline is PREROLLED ...
Setting pipeline to PLAYING ...
New clock: GstAudioSinkClock

I also noticed last night that I was unable to play the NASA-TV feed
in firefox, and only marginally able to watch (very choppy and uneven
but occasionally smooth) using the command line

aoss totem "mms://209.73.189.71/md2enc039?StreamID=65100640&pl_auth=baebe12932d0413d733803bad004428e&ht=30&pl_b=00CEBE2CA2D8B9FD8225CA31BC4839FE84&CG_ID=1369080&Segment=149773"

I also noticed last night that I was unable to play the NASA-TV live Phoenix feed in firefox, and only marginally able to watch (very choppy and uneven but occasionally smooth) using the command line; just after the first images were received from Mars it locked up completely. I tried both with and without aoss because I'm finding there are numerous audio conflicts in the 8.04 release.

aoss totem "mms://209.73.189.71/md2enc039?StreamID=65100640&pl_auth=baebe12932d0413d733803bad004428e&ht=30&pl_b=00CEBE2CA2D8B9FD8225CA31BC4839FE84&CG_ID=1369080&Segment=149773"

this may have been congestion at the NASA server, or due to internet trouble in the way; there is a press conf at 2pm today so I can try it again then knowing that practically no one
would be watching a NASA press conference ;)

NASA TV press conference is also choppy and the sound out of sync; I can't believe it is congestion this time of day and for this content. I'm running a dual-core 2GHz computer too, with no other programs running other than a few usual daemons, so it's not load either.

that's weird than the command line play the video correctly and not totem, the same codecs and mechanism are used in both cases, could you attach an example video to the bug?

Yes it is weird. Apologies to Mr Henderson if this offends him, but it is an amazing clip meant as a guitar instructional, and with that, while maybe "illustrating a bug" might push the definition of "fair use" a bit, here's hoping the overall education merit of the film absolves my soul of the copyright sin ;)

Oh, just to be clear, I get this behaviour when I launch using the "Movie Player" default option in the file browser; if I run totem from the command line, it is also sloooow motion, but we get some diagnostics:

not terribly informative, but it's something.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
