Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

It crashes only sometimes (simply shuts down with no message) when visiting certain sites such as www.cnn.com, I receive the following error message if starting Firefox through the console, running on Ubuntu 8.04:

(firefox:19251): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
**
** Gtk:ERROR:(/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.12.9/gtk/gtkplug.c:182):gtk_plug_set_is_child: assertion failed: (!GTK_WIDGET (plug)->parent)

I think everything should be fully updated. A similar error was mentioned here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/212814

Also consider filing your bug to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and/or http://hendrix.mozilla.org/ for Firefox directly

Hmm I reported it through Firefox so I assumed I was reporting it to Firefox. Silly me I guess :)

I'll keep it in mind for the future though.

Most likely a flash issue. Have you tried to not use flash? Do you
still see the issue then?

I tried setting the preferences to "Always Ask" in FireFox for flash, but the problem persists. How else am I supposed to disable it? Problem is also that I sometimes want to be able to use flash...

Do you have flashblock installed if so please remove it from Firefox and
than try it, There may be an issue with flashblock that is causing this.
Please list all other extensions that you have installed

alternatively remove flash and install mozilla-plugin-gnash or
swfdec-mozilla - which are not perfect, but already good replacements
for lots of use cases.

try removing flash and install mozilla-plugin-gnash or
swfdec-mozilla. those should be much more stable, though not as
feature complete. however, for lots of use-caess they work quite well already.

I don't have flashblock, but I do have noscript. I tried disabling this and I don't seem to be running into the same problem anymore. But that's not really a reasonable long-term option for me either. I'll try what you mentioned, thanks.

I originally installed noscript from their website, I tried the Ubuntu version (don't know if there's a difference) but it did not help.

I installed the gnash and swfdec plugins through the console, but FireFox doesn't seem to find either of them after restarting. I'll keep looking for a solution to that.

you have to remove flashplugin-nonfree and be sure that any
libflashplayer.so is removed from $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/

Did that, but FireFox still isn't finding them.

However, after uninstalling flashplugin-nonfree I haven't had any crashes either, even though I'm still running noscript.

try

 sudo apt-get install --reinstall mozilla-plugin-gnash

otherwise run:

  sudo update-alternatives --auto xulrunner-addons-flashplugin

or

  sudo update-alternatives --config xulrunner-addons-flashplugin

to select a specific flashplugin alternative
