Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

pidgin:
  Installed: 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Usually, I can change the size of the area where I type (the box underneath the actual conversation). I upgraded from the previous Ubuntu release to the current one and I can no longer do this (small and nit-picky perhaps but it's still aggravating)

ProblemType: Bug

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/pidgin

PackageArchitecture: i386
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: pidgin

I can confirm this - not sure if its a duplicate, but definitly a problem on my Xubuntu install of Pidgin (same kernel, pidgin version # as parent)

This patch should fix the problem, but not directly - it appears pidgin's developers DECIDED to change this - if Ubuntu wants the old style as default, this patch will have to be merged with the .diff in the package.

Will submit more detailed patch if I have time tomorrow - this was a test/patch from http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/5252 (patch wasn't accepted yet, but the patch does fix the issue).

see also: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/5252 (and most likely others).

Bug was introduced upstream in pidgin 2.4.0

found a fix, but I have no permissions to decide if this should be merged with ubuntu's package system. I like the fix though.

Same here. It'd be nice to have a fix.

Seems the UI change is intentional. The text box will resize as you type.

preference, convention, and choices REMOVED when people use them.
Regardless of your choice, I may not like your choice, and others may
agree with either one.

I know how to change it back to what I prefer, and have. I shall not
post any more on this, my concerns and opinions are not reaching
anyone who is willing to take this on. Goodbye.

I use a visual style on Windows, and should be able to resize the text input area because the default size set by Pidgin is way, way too small. I am not altering other parts of my system, the flaw is in Pidgin.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. There have been many changes in Ubuntu & Pidgin since the time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, please update this bug report with that information.

I'm currently using pidgin 2.6.6 from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. What is causing
this bug is program design: there is no facility to dynamically change
text input area height from the user interface - i.e. no handle of
anything that can be dragged by a pointer.
