Bug Description

I am attempting to upgrade Ubuntu Studio x64 from 7.10 to 8.04. I first tried using Update Manager through the web and DVD. Both fail with this report:

>>>
Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.
<<<

There is also another message that is displayed, to the effect that no Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Edubuntu Desktops could be found. I did not save the text of that message. I did have Cinelerra and PiTiVi installed, but they seem to be gone now (described later).

I next tried this in Terminal:
>>>
sudo do-release-upgrade
<<<

The process warned me that some packages would be removed, and Cinelerra was among them. I did not notice PiTiVi, but I expect it was there as well.

The process next stopped because of a change I had made to /etc/sysctl.conf for Cinelerra, I chose to replace my file with the new maintainer's version.

The process ended with the following, copied from where the errors started:

>>>
Setting up gnome-btdownload (0.0.30-2) ...

ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

I tried upgrading to 8.04 from a clean install of 7.10, which also failed, apparently due to Bug #221382. I then removed the Audacious and nVidia packages and tried again. The upgrade succeeded, but I could not get any resolutions greater than 640x480 to work, even after installing the nVidia restricted drivers. I did a clean install of 8.04, and everything seems to have worked as it should.

The specific upgrade issues shown in your log appear to be related to 1) installation of cinelerra (which was not in 7.10), and upgrade issues with kdenlive/libmlt0.2.5, which I cannot reproduce in local upgrade testing, but I'm not sure in what package it may have been fixed.. Bug #221382 is definitely separate from this one, as are the resolution issues.

I'm marking this bug "Invalid" beause of cinelerra, because it's related to the known fact that upgrade-manager and Ubuntu Studio don't support each other, because the other issues are separate (and individually solved), and mostly because the submitters' system now works properly (with no other subscribers), so it is likely to be impossible to track down exactly what broke.
