Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

Hardy fails to boot a Clevo M720s (OEM machine labeled "BANGHO" in Argentina) unless I disable either ACPI or SMP. Instead, it just freezes.

It did the same with Gutsy's CD. The machine is currently running Gutsy on top of the Feisty kernel (2..6.18-generic), which boots if run with the "noapic nolapic" options.

If I try to boot the Hardy CD with "noapic nolapic" but without "quiet splash", I see the machine freezes after the following output:

[47.327431] ACPI: CPU0 (power states: C1[C1] C2[C2] C3[C3])
[47.327430] ACPI: Processor [CPU0] (supports 8 throttling states)
[47.328445] ACPI: SSDT 37D962E8, 022D (r1 PmRef Cpu1Ist 3000 INTL 20050228)
[47.329109] ACPI: SSDT 37D95FB2, 022D (r1 PmRef Cpu1Ist 3000 INTL 20050228)
[47.330533] ACPI: CPU1 (power states: C1[C1] C2[C2] C3[C3])
[47.330730] ACPI: Processor [CPU1] (supports 8 throttling states)
[47.330882] ACPI Exception (processor_core-0816): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]
[47.331063] ACPI Exception (processor_core-0816): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]
[47.331235] ACPI Exception (processor_core-0816): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]
[47.331405] ACPI Exception (processor_core-0816): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]
[47.331574] ACPI Exception (processor_core-0816): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]
[47.331743] ACPI Exception (processor_core-0816): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]

The only way to revive the machine at this point is to power cycle.

The kernel *does* boot with either the 'nosmp' or 'acpi=off' options, but both options leave the notebook seriously crippled: either it limps along on only one core, or it can't do any power management.

I'm attaching the output of dmesg when booting with 2.6.18.

Indeed, I do! Thanks!

Two problems with this:

1) we still don't know why this works, and it would be useful to correct it in
such a way that people can make it work easily.
2) for some reason, ACPI will not shut down the machine when this is on.
Actually, I'm not even sure that ACPI is working at all, I haven't had much
time to play with the machine recently.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Good news. I just tried Intrepid Alpha 5, and the machine freezes bad with the default option, but boots fine with "noapic nolapic". I got it to boot once with just "nolapic", but when I tried it again it failed.
