Bug Description

i've very long time booting with Hardy 2.6.24-16
My config is: mobo Asus p5wdh video Asus en8500gt c2d 4500 2go ddr2 800

Kernel log report this line twice: Acpi exception (processor_core-0816): ae_not_found processor device is not present [20070126]
I perform some search and have found discussions about this message: it seems that appear when bios mobo have multi core capability and cpu used has only 1 or 2 cores.
example: my bios mobo is able to accept cpu with up to 4 cores, but i use a core2duo on it. So the boot process try to find tthe 2 others missing core.
The result is a long time searching for that and report the acpi exception.
For better time booting, boot process might control the number of core installed and not report the bios core capability.

Found in dmesg:
[ 31.127369] ata4.00: Drive reports diagnostics failure. This may indicate a drive
[ 31.127372] ata4.00: fault or invalid emulation. Contact drive vendor for information.
[ 31.127375] ata4.00: device is on DMA blacklist, disabling DMA
[ 31.127728] ata4.00: configured for PIO4

There are some additional messages regarding device sdd and this may be the cause of the slow booting.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux which is the kernel for Hardy Heron.

see also http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10466

After some tweaking, i've found a partial solution by removing the Sil4723'jumpers : no more warning about false ata4 ide device (due to that Sil chipset).
But, irqpoll is always needed and kernel don't well recognize hardware: dmidecode find the real good mobo model, lspci don't; and how is it possible than a chipset can be identified as an ata device ? incredible !!!

I suppose that this acpi exception is related to : 1) mobo and bios capabilities (mine can deal with quad cores); 2) model of cpu intalled (mine is c2d).
In fact, it seems to me that boot process is confused about the 2 others missing cores !!! (AE_not_Found (processor_core-0816) appears twice indeed.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

tried the new 2.6.27 Ununtu kernel.

I do not get the acpi exception: AE_not_Found (processor_core-0816). But the boot gets into a freeze again

It stops here:

Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle

Again only can boot using noapic acpi=off options

Found a possible solution. After searching on the web, i found a option for the boot that resolved the problem:
boot option:
nohz=off

Hi Guys,

It seems this particular issue has been resolved with a kernel newer than 2.6.25 so I'm marking this Fix Released.

@astroman, if you still are experiencing the boot issues you mention, care to open a new report? It's helpful to the development teams if bug reports target one specific issue. Thanks.

I reported bug #229620 originally, which got marked as a duplicate of this bug. Unfortunately, Intrepid's kernel still freezes in the same spot, even with the "noapic nolapic" flags on, so I guess it either wasn't a duplicate after all, or the bug is not completely fixed yet.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
