Bug Description

Tested on:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-16-386 #1 Thu Apr 10 12:50:06 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 2.6.24-16.30-386

Issue:
High pitched buzzing sound being produced through speakers/headset on Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard from Ubuntu 6.10 and every version after it, all the way to 8.04, buzzing starts early in the usplash/startup process and stay until the computer is turned off. The buzzing is intermittent depending on if the computer is working hard or not. It sounds like interference from the bus to the audio. Patches are welcomed, I can test them for you.

Hi komputes,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 228024

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I can no longer confirm this bug as my motherboard got fried while beta testing Jaunty. This has been an issue from Ubuntu 7.04 to 9.04 beta (which is what was tested last). The best workaround is to lower the speaker volume and pump the logical volume, as well as muting any unused devices. This does not fix the issue but the high pitch buzz is not as audible. The pitch is not audible if you play a sound file, tested this with a WAV file that contained 30 seconds of silence.

As my motherboard is fried, this bug report will need to be continued by the owner of an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard.

I have an ASUSTeK M3N-H/HDMI motherboard with onboard nvidia sound and can confirm that this noise still occurs, The sound I hear is intermittant and really only started when I put 9.04 on, I am using alpha of 9.10 and the issue is still there. The sound I am hearing does seem to come from possible the onboard pc speaker. The longer the pc is on, the less the sound occurs.

Hi Juju_72,

Here is an interesting test: If you reboot and simply play a sound file full of silence (like the one attached), can you still hear the buzz/noise while it is playing?

At the moment I can't boot into Ubuntu, the last update mullered my system,
I'll let you know when I get it working, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't make
any difference if audio is playing or not as the sound doesn't come from the
speakers.
I have windows7 RC on the same Pc and that doesn't produce any noise.

Juju_72 you can boot from a LiveCD and test it out in the live environment without needing to install.

Yes, I can still hear the noise while playing the file. I'm ripping a CD at
the moment and a short sound is repeating itself about every 1-2 seconds,
much more often than when the PC is doing nothing

Juju_72, The issue is a little different then. When I play the silence, the buzz goes away. There is no doubt that there may be something buddy in nvidia audio drivers but I am not sure that we experienced the same thing.

I was having this same issue
I installed Gnome ALSA mixer, and played with the LFE level, clocking it down and returning it back to high and it seems to have fixed the problem.

addendum: buzz returned, but same thing with LFE level fixed it. i am leaving LFE turned all the way down to see if that remedies it more permanently

Can't seem to get it to fix permanently
But just tinkering with the LFE level ( up or down)fixes it instantly for a short while. , even if a stream is playing;

Hope this helps with solving it

Ben wrote on 2009-11-10:
This is a new bug for me - though I am not sure if it happened before I installed Karmic.

Previously, I ran a cable to connect my computer chassis to the chassis of my HiFi - and this killed the buzzing to a level barely audible above noise (at full volume - though normally volume never goes past 25%).

Now the connection makes absolutely no impact.... and buzzing tends to come and go. The best way to silence it is to load up VLC, set volume to a minimum and play a track - then it's silent.

It's the quiescent state that's noisy!
</i>

I also a buzzing that happens randomly while in quiescent state and disappears as fast as anything is played.

ok
another update. In gnome Alsa Mixer, theer are bunch of checkboxes at the bottom. I unchecked "IEC958 Default PCM and checked one of the two options for IEC958. It seems to mostly eliminate the buzz. I sometimes here it very faintly, and clicking on a level in gnome alsa mixer fixes it, but this is pretty rare now

I'm not sure this is the same problem I had, but here is the solution that worked for me:

prompt-$ sudo aptitude install athcool
prompt-$ sudo athcool off

To persist the change:

prompt-$ $EDITOR /etc/default/athcool
# change ATHCOOL_REVERSED to "yes"

For some background on what is the problem an what "athcool" does, see the following thread:
