Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Having manually edited of xorg.conf to set Virtual as described in bug #220563 on my system I find that the screen-resolution settings are not preserved between different logins.

Go to System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution and set up dual monitors. This generally works once the manual bit of xorg.conf is set, though it usually takes a couple of attempts to get everything the right way around.

I expect the settings to be preserved between logins but in practice I have to use the screen-resolution tool every login as the system defaults to one monitor or cloned monitors.

thank you for your bug report. do you have a monitors.xml file created in your .gnome2 user directory? could you attach it to the bug? do you know how to apply a patch to a package and rebuild it? the change on http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewcvs/rpms/gnome-desktop/F-9/add-randr-12.patch?r1=1.18&r2=1.19&sortby=date&makepatch=1&diff_format=h could fix this issue, we can build a test package for you if required in which case what architecture do you use?

monitors.xml attached

I'm using the 32 bit intel version of Hardy - I'll have a go at applying the patch and rebuilding it, though I've never built anything as big as gnome before so I don't rate the chances of success very highly! Also it won't be until tomorrow.

the attached deb is a rebuild using the change, could you give it a try?

I tried the deb (thanks very much for that) and the settings are still not preserved between logins - even after rebooting the machine.

seems to be a different issue then, unconfirming and to debug by somebody getting the bug

Well at the risk of a bug reporter of absolutely no value - it appears to work now! I've no idea why it didn't immediately function but all seems o.k. now.

does it work using the hardy version or the build attached to the bug?

It works using the build attached to the bug.

could you try reinstalling the hardy version and see if it breaks again?

Grant Ingram (g-l-ingram) wrote :

O.k I've gone back to the Hardy version and the screen resolution is not preserved between logins once again. The breakage occurs only after the second and subsequent login, the first login worked just fine.
