Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Just upgraded from Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 to Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.

By visiting the web page http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4986 Xorg will consistently crash every single time.
The crash is experienced as the screen going black momentarily and the gdm login being displayed, all previous gnome session state is lost.

In syslog the following message is displayed.

In xorg.0.log.old the following backtrace is logged.

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80c780e]
1: [0xb7eec420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

Also note, I was using Firefox 3.0b5 to load the site, and I use nvidia binary video driver.

Just confirming this is NOT a firefox issue. I have repeated the problem using epiphany web browser.

OK.
I think we need some more information. Can you please attach the following files:
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/gdm

Ah, I forgot to ask you something else.
Epiphany and Firefox both use the mozilla engine. It could also be a bug in that program. Could you try to visit the same page with another browser like Konqueror or Opera?
Thanks.

This does NOT reproduce using Opera Web Browser. Opera/9.27 (X11; Linux i686; U; en).

It does not reproduce in browsers like dillo, w3m, elinks. Maybe Ubuntu users should stop using firefox until this is fixed?

It looks like this bug is caused in the mozilla back-end thing that both epiphany and firefox use. But we need more information to determine what the problem is. Are there any files with mozilla, firefox or epiphany in the directory /var/crash?

Nothing in /var/crash to do with firefox, epiphany or gecko.

OK.
Can you also place /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/dmesg after you've reproduced the crash?

As mentioned in the parent bug #212648

Workaround:
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/nvidia/libwfb.so.xserver-xorg-core /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so
