i've resolved the problem deleting .mozilla directoy. It's in your home dir
(/home/USER_NAME). On ubuntu, with Nautilus, you can switch option to see
hide dirs.

you only need to delete the sqlite files in your profiles directory.

e.g.:
rm /home/xxx/.mozilla/firefox/k7clqron.default/*.sqlite

restart firefox and you're done.

Most probably only one of the sqlite files causes the problem, but I did not find out which it was.

Please, if you seee this, _dont_ delete all sqlite files. first: take a backup of your profile so we can look what exactly is broken. Remember that if you delete those files you probably loose data.

can you still reproduce by copying all in at once?

Did you keep a backup of your .mozilla folder in the initial state?

First step is to back up your .mozilla folder. then remove the
places.sqlite file from it and if that fixed it see if you can open
that file with the sqlite3 program that should be available on your
disc.

In the end I moved my .mozilla folder to a new location and started
firefox and closed it. I then copied the contents of my old profile
into the new one that was created and that seemed to work fine.

I am having the same problem as everyone here, last night all was fine, i didn't turn my computer off and now it is exactly as described, nav buttons not working, history frozen and unable to clear.

i can't find the .sqlite files at all and nothing seems to be in the same arrangement as anyone else here, i have several firefox folders in usr/lib but not in the location mentioned (home/user_name/mozilla/firefox), in these folders i can't find anything relating to any .sqlite or anything which matches what is mentioned above.

i had ran out of memory on my HDD, it all makes sense now, having no disk storage left also causes this problem, which would make sense as it worked fine yesterday; i left a d/load overnight and this morning the d/load had stalled and ffox wasn't working properly. Stupid mistake but i recommend others check this before deleting files, always start with the simple things i guess :p

It seems to me when this problem occurred it would be when i would shut down firefox, leave my computer on, and then come back later. I discovered that for some reason the program was not shutting itself down when i closed it. I just brought up the task manager went to the processes and found the firefox.exe program running. I highlighted it and canceled it and it has worked fine since. Hope that helps.

After searching for 10 minutes I stumbled upon this bug.

Deleting formhistory.sqlite fixed everything. I have corrupt formhistory.sqlite lying in safe folder; as it might contain personal info I don't feel like attaching it here. If you still need it, contact me.

As I understand, it is not really ubuntu issue, but firefox, right?

I noticed that the problem occurred on my system when the
'/home/user/.mozilla' directory was becoming quite large, possibly
exceeding the size of the allotted offline cache size.

The way I solved the issue was to:
1) check I backed up my bookmarks (firefox won't allow you to backup to
html...but I think you can copy the json files)
2) delete the '/home/user/.mozilla' directory, then
3) restart firefox.

All browser problems were resolved. There should be a solution to
automatically cleaning up the cache. I do it manually from time to time
under 'Tools>Clear Private Data'.

I have recently encountered this same problem. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit, and firefox 3 64-bit. I tried disabling all extensions (addons), plugins, etc. I tried re-installing Firefox from synaptic, all with no luck.
