Bug Description

When trying to mount a burned DVD i get
"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so"

dmesg shows :

[ 281.391017] attempt to access beyond end of device
[ 281.391023] sr0: rw=0, want=68, limit=4
[ 281.395042] attempt to access beyond end of device
[ 281.395048] sr0: rw=0, want=1252, limit=4
[ 281.395055] attempt to access beyond end of device
[ 281.395057] sr0: rw=0, want=1028, limit=4
[ 281.395060] UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
[ 281.402347] attempt to access beyond end of device
[ 281.402352] sr0: rw=0, want=68, limit=4
[ 281.402356] isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16

DVD drive is a NEC DVD_RW ND-4550A, firmware was flashed to latest (1.09).

works perfectly on Gutsy (installed on the same computer, with the same DVD media)

One thing I did noticed is that the DVD drive device name and major and minor device number has changed :
in 7.10 it was /dev/hdc: block special (22/0)
in 8.04 its /dev/scd0: block special (11/0)

Excactly the same error here, same messages when trying to mount, same name changing.
In both laptop (Toshiba) and desktop (generic, built piece b piece) machines, upgrades yesterday.

This is a serious problem. I have 6 compaq laptops and a sony vaio PC both with the same problem
the CDRW/DVDrom drive will not mount video or data DVDs that were even burnt with the *same drive* in Gutsy.
I plug the drive into a gutsy PC and they work perfectly fine.
When I click on the drive after inserting the DVD I get

# Unable to mount location. No media in drive. #

Got the same problem, maby it's related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/44233 ? In my case I think it's an UDF volume, but changing it to auto doesn't work.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive further feedback. Thanks.

Bug persist form gutsy to intrepid with 2.6.27-11.

I used to be able to circumnavigate this using udf-tools (restarting it before each time I inserted a DVD-R) but this stopped working a while ago. what I do get now is an error log:

1. when inserting a DVD-R NOTHING happens (not event a syslog entry)

2. when I try to manually mount I get:

[ 352.955616] attempt to access beyond end of device
[ 352.955626] sr0: rw=0, want=68, limit=4
[ 352.962786] isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16

3. when I try using 'sudo /etc/init.d/udftools restart' I get:
[ 552.245246] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.27/fs/sysfs/dir.c:463 sysfs_add_one+0x4e/0x50()

It seems like this is a duplicate of bug 214413. I'm marking it as such for now. Please continue to track this issue with that report. Thanks.

I don't think this is the same bug as 214413. eg the text "attempt to access beyond end of device" doesn't seem to occur in the dmesg output people list there.
