I setup the smbpasswd in terminal so no, it worked before I upgraded

I did try with smbclient as suggested and I can see the shares with it if I put in a password. If I don't enter a password it reports:

Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Anonymous login successful

Then gives me a list of all the machines on the LAN.

Nautilus never asks me for a password when browsing. If I type in a location, e.g. smb://WindowsBox/SharedDocs, I sometimes get in and sometimes get a timeout error.

don't reopen a bug only because you have a similar issue, better to open a new bug and describe clearly your configuration and what you are trying to do and what issue you get

How do I report confirmation of the bug described above? i.e. Nautilus in ubuntu 8.04 can't browse Windows shares

On a true peer-to-peer network (a subnet with NO domain controler, NO wins server, NO dedicated single servers of any kind). In ubuntu 8.04.1 the Nautilus network file browser fails to get and show the shares from Windows machines when the shares are not anonymous (when the shares require user/password authentication).

Nautilus DOES show the shares from other types of linux machines (say from CentOS 5.2 machines).

For example: If one of the Windows Xp machines is named "LAPTOP" and is sharing the entire C drive (no rants please)

Smbclient -L LAPTOP is able to get the shares and is able to connect, after you provide a password
smb//LAPTOP/C <--------------WORKS FINE

However, since these are NOT anonymous shares from the Windows box, smbclient -L LAPTOP -N returns:

/home/greg #smbclient -L LAPTOP -N
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[MYGROUP] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

 Sharename Type Comment
 --------- ---- -------
cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe \srvsvc to machine LAPTOP. Error was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[MYGROUP] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

 Server Comment
 --------- -------
 LAPTOP LAPTOP
 LIVING-ROOM LIVING-ROOM

 Workgroup Master
 --------- -------
 MYGROUP LAPTOP

Under these conditions the nautilus network file browers fails to browse, however if you then enter a valid share in the nautilus target text box ( such as smb://laptop/c ) nautilus then prompts for the password and IS able to connect to the share.

I have been unable to find any way change the configurations (on ubuntu or Windows) and make authenticated WindowsXP shares work.

Thank You. (So....do I need to do something else to make this a "real" bug report?)
By the way, the CentOS 5.2 machines (using KDE) can browse the WindowsXP shares with no issues.
