Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu.

Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

gnome-screensaver

3) What you expected to happen and What happened instead.

My screensaver turns on as usual. I choose Flurry as my main screensaver. I set screensaver timeout for 5 minutes.
I go to lunch for an hour. When I come back , my screensaver freeze. I press spacebar , Screensaver disappear.
It turns to a blank black screen and the unlock window not appear. So the system freeze.
I can't do anything (Alt+Ctrl+BkSpc ,Alt+Ctrl+F1-6,....). So I have to Alt+PrtSc+(R-E-I-S-U-B)

This case didn't happen in gutsy. It happens after I upgraded to hardy.

I notice that it'll happen when the screensaver has already freezed (after some time passed).
If It has just switch to screensaver-mode , it works as usual.

With ubuntu 8.04 fresh install, I tried to preview every screensaver one by one and my computer was freezed too (at least three times).

Confirmed -- this was a problem in Ubuntu 7.10 and still is a problem in 8.04.

When Flurry hangs, the machine becomes unusable. If you then ssh into the machine you will find TWO flurry processes spinning at 100% CPU. Killing them both makes the machine usable again (able to unlock the screen).

Maybe it has something to do with my problem. I have had the same problem with the screensaver attached. I tried to switch down computer by pressing Switch Off button, and it worked (it shut down properly), so it's not a hard lockup. Anyways, I could not use X.org anymore.

I'm using a MSI 1217 laptop (Intel 965 Mobile Graphics), 1GiB RAM and so on. 32 bit version of Ubuntu.

I attach a photo taken of the computer when it stopped.

Seems fixed according to upstream... plus, flurry is back in xscreensaver-gl in Karmic, so I assume it's been re-enabled. However, how about a backport to Jaunty? :)

Closing, since I believe this is fixed in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. Please reopen if needed.
