Distribution upgrade (to hardy): Package "update-manager" failed to install or upgrade

Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Trying to upgrade from gutsy to hardy using the update manager.
Failing phase: Installing the upgrades. Passed phases:

Preparing to upgrade
Setting new software channels
Getting new packages

From the terminal:

The same thing happens when I try the distribution upgrade again.

Another Ubuntu 7.10 upgrade failed the same way.
Partial upgrade fails, too.

Eventually found a workaround:

0. Distribution upgrade fails as described above.
1. Manually use synaptic to upgrade the update-manager package
    (and its dependencies).
2. Then use update manager to finish the distribution upgrade.

Uh, actually I had to do something more in step 1:

upgraded dpkg, libgnomecanvas2
upgraded ubuntu-desktop

Thanks for your bugreport.

Please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade to this bugreport. If two upgrades failed, please attach the logs of both as they may have failed in a different way.

I have the same crash and error message right now. But for some reason, when the installation should start, MusicBrainz Picard reported it's own crash. It's a little mystery for me, I had all programs closed when performing upgrade.
