From looking at this bug, I have no indication why the postinst failed. could you please provide a typescript of the upgrade session? I need to know why the postinst script actually fails for you

What you are about to enter is what is called a Distinguished Name or a DN.
There are quite a few fields but you can leave some blank
For some fields there will be a default value,
If you enter '.', the field will be left blank.

View Full Version : apt-get interrupted

Hi,

I interrupted (Ctrl-C) apt-get while it was downloading java1.5 and since then, when I run apt-get it says:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

After I do what it says, apt-get seems to work until I reboot my computer. Then problem returns again. Is there a way to fix this?

thanks,
David

This is a desperate call for help. Sorry to bug you.....HOW do I post a message on this forum. I am completely new to this. There is no "post new message" or anything like it. I am logged on but this forum tells me nothing.

sudo apt-get -f install

$ sudo apt-get -f install
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

@Kujane: At the forum-index page of each subforum there is a "New Thread"-link.

Sorry to resurrect and old thread, but I'm having this problem too. I've tried following the method above, but the problem is that when I do so, the process (I'm trying to install the MS core fonts) connects to an incredibly slow server, and the install process gives up on some or all of the packages because they're so slow to download. I eventually kill the process by closing terminal. How can I get rid of this, so that I don't keep getting bugged by it? I'm not bothered about installing the fonts.

The issue that install/update freezes with
[: 208: -z: unexpected operator

also remains in ubuntu 8.10

I "solved" this by installing boxbackup from upstream which works fine with the installation documentation from there
and I added the linue

exit 0

as second line to /var/lib/dpkg/info/boxbackup-server.postinst
to skip all the ubuntu staff.

I think umaintained package witch are not installable should be removed from the repository.

Update with workaround:

If you run
sudo apt-get install boxbackup-server

And just reply on the two prompts with just pressing the <enter> key and then when the installation is complete run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure boxbackup-server

It actually seams like the package is installed :-)

This bug was fixed in the package boxbackup - 0.11~rc3~r2502-1

---------------
boxbackup (0.11~rc3~r2502-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release, built from svn revision 2502.
    - silently ignores sockets and named pipes (Closes: #479145)
    - syslog facility is now configurable (Closes: #521283)

boxbackup (0.11~rc2+r2072-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release. (Closes: #503942)
  * no longer use the upstream tarballs, but create them with the script
    debian/get-orig-source.sh to create the orig.tar.gz. See README.Debian
for a rationale of this step.
  * Therefore, run autoconf on the buildds.
  * always use config.sub/config.guess from the autotools-dev package
  * Fake a "VERSION.txt" instead of letting the build system try to figure
out the svn version by itself (which would fail)
  * no longer include patches to the upstream source inline. This doesn't
work out too well with bzr. Port all patches to quilt instead.
  * factor out distribution independent cleaning rules to a new shell script
    called debian/clean.sh.
  * make debian/NEWS actually parsable by dpkg-parsechangelog. This should
    make apt-parsechangelog work.
  * Update debian specific documentation to new URL: http://boxbackup.org
  * Don't install the files DOCUMENTATION.txt and CONTACT.txt. Both contain
just (outdated) contact addresses and URLs. (Closes: #503659)
  * add translation for swedish debconf messages. Translation provided by
    Martin Bagge <email address hidden>. (Closes: #513776)
  * adjust configure.ac to only AC_SUBST single variables instead of 3 in
a row. Fixes FTBFS on sid, found at http://bugs.gentoo.org/205558

boxbackup (0.11~rc2-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * Fix shell scripting in the debconf interaction code of the package's
postinst script. This should prevent problems like LP: #222999
