Changed to reflect current package name providing the nvidia-settings binary.

May the previously attached icon be distributed, or is an alternate icon required?

Hmm, I don't really like that icon because of the unnecessary grey circle behind the logo. Here - http://www.nvidia.com/object/imagekit.html - you can find the logo's on the official nvidia website, the corporate logo (without the letters) seems a better choice to use because it's more pretty. And in the "Logo Guidelines" document on that page it says:

"Use of NVIDIA trademarks, logos and images require written approval from NVIDIA. Please contact your NVIDIA marketing representative or email NVIDIA marketing communications at <email address hidden>."

Those icons definitely cannot be distributed (unless there is new negotiation between Ubuntu and nVidia). A new icon should be created for this purpose, and licensed to allow distribution.

What about letting System->Preferences->Screen Resolution run
nividia-settings when the closed nvidia driver is detected? gnome-display-properties could be made a wrapper script to choose between them, e.g. by querying for the NV-CONTROL extension.

This is not actually a duplicate of bug #44897. The nvidia-settings source package also provides a nvidia-settings binary that needs a .desktop file. This package is only useful for people using the legacy drivers. On the other hand, it may well become moot if bug #72979 can be addressed, but this likely waits for some other mechanism to support the older nvidia cards.

actually, the upstream legacy driver does contain the nvidia-settings binary, but it was not included in the package..

This bug was fixed in the package linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 - 2.6.24.8-7.19

linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (2.6.24.8-7.19) hardy; urgency=low

  * Really include nvidia-settings binary in nvidia-glx-legacy, and set
    Conflicts accordingly. (LP: #22297)
  * nvidia-glx-new suggested nvidia-settings, now conflicts instead.
