Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

After upgrading from gutsy to hardy I can't synchronize my Sony Clie any longer using kpilot. If I start synchronizing I get the following message in /var/syslog:

Apr 25 19:30:17 darkstar kernel: [ 3691.076037] usb 8-3.3: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 12
Apr 25 19:30:17 darkstar kernel: [ 3691.169737] usb 8-3.3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Apr 25 19:30:17 darkstar kernel: [ 3691.170378] usb 8-3.3: palm_os_4_probe - error -32 getting connection info
Apr 25 19:30:17 darkstar kernel: [ 3691.170396] visor: probe of 8-3.3:1.0 failed with error -5

Using Gutsy everything works well. I am using now kubuntu 8.04.

Hi andschuster,

Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
* sudo lsusb > lsusb.log

It would be good to wait to capture your entire dmesg output after you attempt to synchronize. Hopefully additional debugging information will be logged. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

Hi,

here are the files you wished to upload. I logged dmesg immediately after my Sony Clie finished synchronisation with an error. lsusb is logged during synchronisation so that you see the Sony Clie.

Greetings

Andreas

Hi there

I can confirm this problem: after upgrading my Gutsy Gibbon x64 to Hardy Heron x64, kpilot can no longer synchronize my Palm m130. The visor module exits with status -5 as well. Logs attached (generated with commands mentioned earlier by Leann Ogasawara).

Cheers, Peter

Hi,

yes, it seems that it is fixed in 2.6.25. Will there be an update to hardy so that visor is working again using 8.04?

Greetings

Andreas

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delayed response. Care to test the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel? It was most recently rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and is currently available in the following PPA:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive

If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA basically do the following . . .

Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kernel-ppa.list to include the following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main

Then run the command: sudo apt-get update

You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel package. After you've finished testing you can remove the kernel-ppa.list file and run 'sudo apt-get update' once more. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

"Me Too" - Same error, with a Palm Tungsten W.

I tried the fix above (ppa kernel) and I can't see any 2.6.25 images after doing the apt-get update..... ie:

root@chris:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# apt-cache search linux | grep 25
rt2500-source - source for rt2500 wireless network driver
rt2570-source - source for rt2570 wireless network driver
tn5250 - 5250 telnet emulator for accessing an IBM iSeries (AS/400)
root@chris:/etc/apt/sources.list.d#

I also tried replacing 'hardy' with 'intrepid' in the sources file, and it didn't appear to have a 2.6.25 either....

FYI:

Built a kernel from the current source from kernel.org (linux-2.6.25.4) and it works fine...

Takes ages to compile though, first time I've done a custom 2.6.x kernel, on a 3Ghz P4 it took over 30 minutes... (not sure how long, I walked away and left it...)

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for testing the upstream kernel, that's really helpful and it sounds to be promising. Also, sorry about the kernel-ppa at the moment. It seems the 2.6.25 images have been removed in preparation for the upcoming images built against 2.6.26. However, the 2.6.26 based kernel is experiencing some build failures so no packages are available for testing. I'll try and update this report when it's ready for testing. Again, sorry for the hassle but thanks for your additional testing upstream.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha releases are available for testing htttp://www.ubuntu.com/testing . They actually contain an updated 2.6.26 based Ubuntu kernel. The only thing to note is that LiveCD images won't be available for testing until Alpha3 so you may want to wait to test. When you do, please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I just tried to do do-release-upgrade -d
and got an error:

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

Unable to find expected entry partner/binary-amd64/Packages in

, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or
old ones used instead.

I'll keep trying until the repositories are taken care of.
Note that this bug was resolved in intrepid, so I doubt
jaunty will cause a regression.

Thanks,
sordna
