Bug Description

Binary package hint: samba

I'm just in the process to upgrade from latest Gutsy to Hardy final with Update Manager via Internet.

The process hangs at "Setting up samba-common (3.0.28a-1ubuntu4)".

In /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log I find the message:

WARNING no activity on terminal for 240 seconds (Configuring samba-common)

which is just what I am experiencing.

I decided to press Ctrl-C inside Update Manager's terminal. This immediately continued the Distribution Upgrade, but lead to this error and half-installed packages.

Hi Andreas,

I see that, at least presently, you have the current version of the ucf package installed from Ubuntu 8.04.

Can you tell me if this error is reproducible for you if you re-attempt the upgrade? It may be that this dependency on ucf needs to be a versioned dependency because the previous version of ucf is insufficient.

This doesn't seem to be a very common problem, since no one has reported it before now; there may be something very particular to your installation that causes this hang, which we'll try to get to the bottom of.

If it hangs on a subsequent attempt, the output of 'ps awx | grep -A5 samba-common' may help diagnose this further.

This bug crashed the update from 7.10 to 8.04.
I'll retry in a few minutes.

Steve, actually Update Manager repaired the problems after some complaint messages. However, the package cleanup process and reboot were omitted. Looks like I'm fully upgraded to 8.04 now.

So I guess, it's not reproducable for me.

Ok, thanks, this is also useful information, and makes me suspect more
strongly that it may be an issue with insufficiently-tight dependencies on
ucf.

Will try to debug it from that angle.

Same, or at least similar experience. Distribution Upgrade hung up and inactive after several complaints, with 2 minutes to go installing, and never got to cleanup and reboot.

Since I have never been able to reproduce this bug, and there have been only a handful of reports of this issue, I think this report should be closed as 'wontfix'. If it is a ucf versioned dependency issue, it will not be a problem for upgrades to intrepid, and it doesn't seem to be causing enough problems to warrant an SRU to Ubuntu 8.04.

Thanks for the info. I do remember seeing a window pop up and I probably
took the wrong option. After the installation completed, I manually
installed the Samba.

A colleague had this same problem and it turns out there was a debconf

she says the window didn't come to the foreground.
