Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Applications tab in preferences is empty in Firefox-3.0b5.

Using 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3 under KDE 3.5.9.

I tested it with a new profile and with my current working profile.

you can workaround this by installing firefox-gnome-support package. this might pull in some gnome dependencies (not too many).

To fix this we need information how to properly gather mime/filextension mapping for kde through a kde (or even lower, like xdg) API.

Alexander,
Is there any plans to set up a firefox-kde-support package to help with kde firefox intergration? I know it might not help since its GTK but let me know if you think it will help, i should be on IRC tomorrow.

An official tar ball doesn't have this kind of problems, so if I understand correctly there are parts of the official Firefox code split off and are now part of the Ubuntu firefox-gnome-integration. This package is not installed when you install the firefox meta package. So someone on Kubuntu or another Ubuntu-edition that has no Firefox installed by default (I also understand the firefox-gnome-integration is installed by default on the Ubuntu-desktop) misses some (essential) functionality when installing a meta-package.

I think this is a very serious bug, especially because in the past there was never any kind of problem like this. Also understand that many Kubuntu users install Firefox as their default browser.

So please fix this.

Jeroenvrp, this has been showing for last 3 releases if not longer. I cant recall exact time, if we made the -kde-support package this problem will go away IF IT WILL SOLVE IT. it sounds reasonable atm.

@John: I understand the Gnome-integration is there for the last 3 releases, but the bug "Applications tab in preferences is empty" not. That tab was always there, with or without the gnome-integration.

Off course it's a good idea to make an kde-integration-package, but with or without an kde- or gnome-integration-package the applications-tabs should always be visible.

@John: I don't say there are no integration issues with KDE, I only talk about the applications tab, although in Forefox 2 it has a different layout. Your screenshot is in Gnome, so I understand the issue is only under KDE(3).

I have the same problem with Firefox 3 under Kubuntu 8.04 (with KDE 3). I had nothing the the Applications section in Preferences since the early betas.
I have tired reinstalling Firefox 3 and purging all profiles and plug-ins (and such) with no positive result.
Now I am using the latest versions available from the fta-ppa repository and it is till the same.

This would mean to pull in more gnome libs which is not wanted on
kde. Whats missing is firefox-kde-support :).

Then until it is done please at least add a dependency on firefox-gnome-support for the firefox package. Even if there are gnome dependencies, I doubt that anyone wants to use a crippled Firefox, without even knowing what the problem is and how to solve it.

same here, installing firefox-gnome-support fixed it, and I agree that Kubuntu users shouldn't be dependent on firefox-gnome-support.

I am running Xubuntu 8.04 with Firefox 3.01 installed and I am experiencing the same problem. Installing Firefox-gnome-support also fixed the problem here.

Nevertheless, this should somehow be fixed in the original download (through the 'add/remove software' function) as new X/K/Ubuntu users (like myself) will have some trouble/inexperience in finding the solution and fixing it like suggested here.
