Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic

My analog TV-Tuner-PCI-Card Hauppauge Win TV can't run under the following linux-image-2.6.24-14-generic, linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic and the actual linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic.

It produces the following Error:

Interner Fehler - failed to initialize HAL!

Internal Error - failed to initialize HAL!

I can do nothing on the Desktop. I must go with the Keyboard to the Console and restart my PC with STRG + ALT + DEL (ENTF).

I remove the analog TV-Tuner-PCI-Card Hauppauge Win TV. And than, oh wonder:

The PC runs normally.

What want you do?

When you want, I send you my File kern.log as an Attachement.

With the linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic runs the analog TV-Tuner-PCI-Card Hauppauge Win TV. I have used the same card under all Ubuntu Versions before and I have no Problems.

Name: Hauppauge Win TV
White Label: PAL B/G 34704 - Rev J197
Board-No: 340000-09
Chip: Conexant CX23881-19

I hope you can help me - and other peoples too.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

As far as I can make out the card was correctly auto-detected as card no. 10:

[ 10.309667] bttv0: using: Hauppauge (bt878) [card=10,autodetected]

I think the problem lies with tuner not being auto-detected:
[ 10.347033] bttv0: tuner absent

Iam running ubuntu 9.04 2.6.28-15 AMD64.

I managed to get it working.
First I had to unload the bttv module with the following command:

sudo rmmod bttv

Secondly I reloaded the bttv module with my own specs:

sudo modprobe bttv card=10 tuner=55

I say theres still a bug though. The tuner is hardly ever properly detected.

I have the same win TV card. I have it working with an on screen remote after much trial and error.
Make sure you have IVTV, VLC media player and java installed. Go here, http://tvremote.sourceforge.net/documentation.php
and follow the instructions to install CSMonkey TV Remote. I have tried it with media player and found it buggy but it works perfectly with VLC Player.

Hi Andi,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 220194

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
