Bug Description

After upgrading from linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic to linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic resp. linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic the boot splash hangs after approximativly 20%. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del it jumps to 70% but gives a error message, that it cannot start the X-Server. Sometimes, when I have used the 2.6.24-12 version, it comes to the login-screen but reports that hal is not running as soon as the desktop is present.

Nothing overly indicative in those logs. You have all packages up to date at this point? Can you boot into 'recovery' mode in the grub menu?

If I boot into recovery mode i get a similar result. The boot process hangs after uploading the firmware. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del the process goes on until it reports that it cannot start the X-Server. I logged into a terminal and started aptitude, which reported that it could not lock the lock-file as the harddisk was in a read only state.

Nevertheless should all packages been up to date yesterday, as I can boot with the linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic and updated them. The problem with the missing hal occurs only afterwards, when I use the linux-image-2.6.24-16(15)-generic and the problem with the hang during boot does not occur.

Please add the repository as described in

If that fixes it, this is a duplicate of bug 212271 (which it sounds like it is)
