Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

hi there,

a really strange bug occured to me for the very first time.

what is was doing: using evolution to fetch email via pop3
what happened: evolution displayed all fetched email in the inbox, but: the email content shown, both in preview and full view does not match with the "from", "subject", "date" information shown in the respective inbox columns. to make sure, i switched the full view to include headers which confirmed the problem.

i'm sorting my inbox by newest email first.
the mismatch occurs in the manner, that the newest mail received has correct match, but the content of this newest mail is also the content of the second newest, which already has different sender/subject/date. all following (older, that is) email's contents are "shifted" to the next oldest email in the inbox.

example: newest email sender/subject is gmx spam report, 2nd newest email sender/subject is ubuntuforums post notification, 3rd newest email sender/subject is some ebay info. now the actual email contents are: newest email gmx spam report, 2nd newest gmx spam report, 3rd newest ubuntuforums post notification, and so on.

one guess i have is that, before fetching mail today, i had one mail in my inbox which was still marked as unread. this email has not been fetched twice, but it's exactly this email's sender/subject/date that now occurs twice for two email with different content - one of the original content, and one with "shifted" content.

Thank you for reporting this bug, however more information is required for us to assist you. Please include the version of ubuntu you are running "lsb_release -a" as well as the version of evolution you are using "dpkg -l evolution". This will help us properly assign and confirm the bug.

Thank you.

this bug occured for the 2nd time today and seems to be correlated with evolution for some reason downloading a particular unread message twice, as has already happened last time.

i probably should add that i've been using evolution multiple times daily for about 3 years under previous ubuntu/xubuntu versions now, but this particular bug has never occured before.

if you need any more debugging info, please let me know.

cheers,
roots

comment on my 2nd last post: with "unread message" i mean a message in the inbox that has not been marked as "read" yet.

is anyone still on this one?

atm i find this bug definitely making evolution unusable, as i don't have a chance of restoring the original allocation body vs. header.

ok i got a temporary solution from ubuntuforums, where two other people reported the same problem: it seems to be a syncing issue. the emails can be re-synced by dragging them to a dummy folder - where the already appear as synced - and then simple drag them back to inbox. however - this should not become everyday's s.o.p. .... ;-)

HELLOOOO?! does anyone care about this bug? it does still persist, daily, and this kinda workaround doesnt really work because some of the email simply disappear.

Can you run evolution from the command line as: CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution >& evo.log and submit that log to the report? thanks.

after some days of testing, what i've found is, that this bug only occurs when evolution is auto-started with a saved desktop session (ubuntu hardy, gnome). the bug did not occur as of yet if evolution is started manually. this behaviour, along with another evolution auto-start bug i posted (#215643), indicates that evolution may cause several severe problems if auto-started with a saved session. having said that, i consider the above logging being of no real value. if i may help you in debugging in other ways, please let me know!

furthermore, the dummy folder method for resync of the folders described in my post on 2008-04-19, however, does not work properly either under certain circumstances and may cause wanted email (content) to magically disappear into previously deleted messages in the trash folder.

In my case here, this doesn't have anything to do with an auto-started evolution. I start it manually everytime and i have the same bug here too.
