Bug Description

Binary package hint: open-vm-tools

According to VMware, open-vm-tools is an alpha quality release. I am afraid that inclusion in Hardy will cause confusion, and potentially damage to users who install it. It will also cause vm's using it to be unsupported by vmware.

I think we should remove it until a more stable branch is available.

Just wondering what the possible time frame might be before we see open-vm-tools return to the repository? I'm currently working with JeOS 8.04 RC, and it is very unpractical to use the standard vmtools for each virtual machine, as they require the installation of the build tools to be installed. Is there somewhere

This is currently in the work with VMware and a compatible version will
be provided in the partner repository after release and validation of
the tools with it.

Where can I track the status of this new package?

Also, is there a way to see what's in the 'partner' repository, as it does not seem to be shown on http://packages.ubuntu.com ?

It is a pity that these tools are missing. While perhaps only 'alpha' quality, the official vmware tools are currently broken on hardy, whereas the open tools work. Even the vmware blogs are pointing to them:

http://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2008/05/linux-2624-and.html

Perhaps adding a "warning: unsupported" would have been better than removing them entirely.

Is there any chance of bringing them back?

You should still be able to download and install these manually:

Hope that helps,
