[Hardy] mozilla-firefox-locale-es-* is not installed, despite my locale is set to Castilian (Spanish) / Firefox is only available in English

Bug Description

The title says it all.

Also, after I installed mozilla-firefox-locale-es-ar and mozilla-firefox-locale-es-es Firefox's interface was still in English, so I went to about:config and property "general.useragent.locale" was set to "en-US", while my language is set to Castilian (Spanish).

I've set that property to "es-AR", "es_AR", "es-ES", "es_ES", "es-VE", "es_VE" and "es", but nothing happens: Firefox's interface is still in English.

To sum up, Firefox is still in English and I've not found a workaround for this bug.

This applies to both Firefox 2 and 3.

Using Kubuntu hardy and Firefox 2:
Firefox 2 version in repository is 2.0.0.13, but firefox-locale-* packages are 2.0.0.7 version, so they do not work in Firefox.

Using Firefox 3:
There are not language packages for Firefox 3 in repository.

I experience something similar. It looks like there's somewhere a package in ubuntu repositories for es-AR locale that gets installed in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/extensions/. Performing "aptitude search firefox" doesn't show specific locale packages for firefox 3. However, my previous installation (and the default language for gnome evironment) is es-es, so firefox 3 is the only package (AFAIK) what is not currently in es-es. I want developers/packagers to realize that there's an es-ES localization for all firefox 3.x, so if none is included in the repositories yet, please do so *AND* make sure the corresponding upgrade updates firefox settings, according to the locale preferences in gnome.

The current behaviuor (using firefox 3, not firefox 2, which I didn't try yet in Hardy) is that, whatever es_* I set, I get es-AR, even seeing in the about dialog box the locale I set. I've tested this both in a clean Hardy installation and an upgrade from Gutsy.

Firefox 3 translation is in language-pack-gnome-es. mozilla-firefox-locale-* only have the translations for Firefox 2.

At the moment this will get you the es-AR langpack, but that's another bug (being corrected next week, as far as I was told): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/222673

For those interested, the official es-ES xpi is here:

Maybe this could be fixed with an update.

firefox 3.0 has the locales in the gnome-locales package not mozilla locales. This shouldnt be an issue with firefox 2 as most if not all locales should be in there unless noone looked in april due to freeze was in place and we are unable to fix that this late. most of mozilla,s upstream locales work was done around beginning of april and thats too late for us to add them. this will not get fixed in firefox 2 as its not a security rish/update. please test firefox 3.0 locales in gnome-locales package and let me know if they are there. I will give you the exact name in a little while i just got called away

As I wrote before, es-ES is not in the package, unlike es-AR:

# dpkg -L language-pack-gnome-es-base|grep firefox
/usr/lib/firefox-addons
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions

/<email address hidden>/chrome.manifest

firefox 2 is not a main package anymore. thus the language packs are
not automatically installed if you use the language selector.

So until we support universe translations through language selector,
this is won't fix.

 status wontfix

Thanks,
