I am able to see these characters just fine in Ubuntu 8.04 with Pidgin 2.4.1 with the AIM protocol. Which message protocol do you see this behavior.

ICQ protocol

Yep this is confirmed in the ICQ protocol in pidgin. My "test" may not be the best because ICQ isn't supposed to allow you to message yourself, but I think it's more telling that pidgin is allowing me to do this, but then not allowing me when I use those characters.

I'd appreciate it if someone with another ICQ client would confirm this behavior, to make sure it isn't on ICQ's end.
