Bug Description

The speakers work, but the headphones do not. Plugging in a headphone just mutes the speakers.

This occurs with Gutsy and Hardy. No tested yet on Intrepid.

On Gutsy, I've tried quite a few things to get it working, including installing oss and pulseaudio, to no avail

I remember the best I got to getting the headphones working was while running osstest:

Sound subsystem and version: OSS 4.0 (b1011/200712200355) (0x00040003)
Platform: Linux/i686 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 07:42:25 UTC 2008

*** All tests completed OK ***

In the first test, only the speakers play. In the second test, only the headphones play! In the third test, nothing plays.

I would have tried osstest in Hardy beta except osstest isn't installed.

Here's some output from my Hardy beta installation, on which I did not mess with the sound system:

I confirm this bug. Which package should it be assigned to?
I will look at the wiki to see what debug info I can attach.

From the wiki:
General no-sound/low-sound/headphone-no-sound/etc. bugs should be marked against the "linux" source package.

adding 'options snd-hda-intel model=dallas' to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base solves the problem. However, the signal is weak and sound is not loud. With the same amplifier I get 3 times louder sound with a CD player than with the computer.

Changing the status to triaged.

I can confirm the existence of this bug and the mentioned workaround on an up-to-date version of Ubuntu Lucid 32bit, even with the ALSA backport modules installed.

I've changed the status of this bug back to Confirmed. Antoine, please don't mark bugs as 'In Progress' unless they really are. That status was probably the reason why this bug stayed untouched for one and a half year.

Note: the workaround doesn't solve the problems with the microphone, that still does not work.
