Please give a read to http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html on how to report bugs effectively. Some things we need: step by step instructions on how to reproduce this with websites or examples that you see this problem with, I simple attachment of what you are having an issue with. In your case what type of file is it and do you have one without personal info on it that causes this issue?

I've got the same behaviour:

After downloading a file in firefox 3 in Hardy right clicking in the FF3 download manager and selecting "open containing folder", firefox displays a window and ask for an application to open the file with. The same happens after selecting "open" instead of "open containg folder" even though the file type has an associated application (for example for .zip oder .deb files).

I've got reports of other Hardy users that have this behaviour even after a fresh installation (I did an upgrade from Gutsy).

I just noticed that the Applications list in the Firefox preferences is totally empty.

The problem went away after installing the package "firefox-3.0-gnome-support" (I guess the app list is fetched through gnome-vfs).

I resolved this issue by selecting the Thunar program when Firefox
asks which program to use. Now when I select the "open the containing
folder" option, Thunar opens in a new window the folder containing the
file I had requested.

not a bug. firefox lacks kde integration but there are plenty of bugs open for that.

I got this bug when using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Netbook.
Firefox 3.0.9
With the normal Ubuntu it doesn't appear.

Reproduce bug:
Open Firefox
Download a file
Right-click on the file
Select Open containing folder
 - The Open with window opens
 - No application in the list
