Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I'd ordered a brand new Dell XPS M1330 with Ubuntu from Dell. Everything is working just fine except I have intermittant wireless problems when the machine suspends and resumes back. I read a lot of threads on Ubuntu site and I am wondering why this is not solved. I am a technical guy with the knowledge of how to fidddle around with the networking in Linux but this computer is for my wife who hates it already because of this problem.

I made sure the hibernate is not an option but suspend/resume is something happens when she is done using the computer and closes the lid.

I really like to see a good fix available from the team for this known problem.

Thank you

Hi SL,

I see you are running the Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 version of Ubuntu. We're actually about a week away from releasing the latest Hardy Heron 8.04. Would you be interested in giving this newer release a test? It will have an updated version of the kernel and also also uses the iwlwifi drivers. So in your case it will use the iwl3945 driver as the ipw3945 is now deprecated and development efforts have shifted to the iwlwifi project. See the following for more info: http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/ . You can download the latest daily image of the Hardy Heron Beta release at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . You should be able to test by running the LiveCD. Version 1.2.0 of iwlwifi will be used by default. However, it that still proves to be buggy the 'linux-backports-modules' package has an even newever version, 1.2.25, that you could try.

Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Last time I installed 8.10 beta it screwed up the driver for built-in wireless of XPS M1330. Once it suspends it will never wakes up that wireless either. I got something working and if I were the end user I would have been more than happy to upgrade and hack around but unfortunately I bought this for my wife and I can tell at times she doesn't look happy with it...

Thanks anyway
