Bug Description

The boot process stops after "Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) after updating to linux-image-2.6.24-13-generic. The process seems to try to load the X-Server and the cursor appears several times and disappear immediately again. After booting in recovery mode and deinstalling the nvidia-driver the system boots normally afterwards. Under 2.6.24-12-generic everything works fine with the nvidia-driver.

I get this issue in kubuntu as well but no solution as of yet. It seems to try and activate the driver but no go.

Tried many tricks mentioned and installing 3 times (2 times my kernel went along with ALL driver support, which I dunno howto solve).

going to try envy again I think. perhaps.

My video card is a 8700m on a alienware notebook.

Same problem.
I hope there will be soon a solution because it's very often "at update time" the videocard doens't work anymore icm of the resolution i defined.
I've got a build in "Geforce 7050 + nForce630" card on an asus M2N-VM HDMI Motherboard. I use a 24" inch Samsung syncMaster from samsung with a resolution of 1280x1920.

Iám not a linux goeroe so i realy don't know what to do ! Iám so happy i've got 2 pc's, but it's not the way i like this situation.

It may be due to a broken package or something would you be able to describe the driver(version) which caused problems?

I assume the problem was a broken package but it all worked out after
updating the packages a few days later. I totally forgot I entered this into
the bug report. For me the bug was solved a couple of months ago.
