Bug Description

In Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (installed on hard drive), the package xresprobe is missing. This is an essential package and it should be installed by default. Could you fix this?

No, it's not needed by default. You can still install it yourself.

I respectfully disagree. xresprobe is essential for the following actions:

- recognize video hardware with the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
- name video hardware with the command sudo ddcprobe

In Edgy and Feisty, xresprobe was missing too (but in Gutsy it was present, luckily). In the days of Edgy and Feisty, this caused many video related problems which were posted on the Ubuntu forums.

I forgot to mention: xresprobe is also necessary for a correct recognition of video hardware during installation.

No it isn't. As I said, it's not used by anything anymore in 8.04. The xserver-xorg postinst script doens't use it anymore. Instead, xserver autoconfiguration is used which works better.

Thanks for this information! Good to know.

However, I read this line:
For monitor auto-detection, a list of supportable drivers (and/or hardware) will be used to select when to use Xorg's new xrandr-based detection mechanisms. For hardware/driver combinations not on this list, the system will fall back to the existing xresprobe/ddcprobe infrastructure.

I would therefore still like xresprobe to be in the default installation. I think that this will take some of the workload off the forum helpers (like I). xresprobe is only a small package: 0,1 MB (98 kilobyte). So it should be no big problem to add it. Will you consider it?

Xorg7.3Integration was a Gutsy spec, and in fact what you quote is indeed how it was implemented for that.

For Hardy, please refer to the autoconfigure-monitor-frequency spec, which followed on to the Gutsy work by eliminating the need for xresprobe and ddcprobe. Additional details are in the HardyHardwareDetection spec. There are no plans to bring xresprobe back.

Thanks for explaining! You've convinced me.... :-)

Is it still possible though, to edit the settings manually, and if so, how? In certain rare cases, this could be desirable. And apart from that, many Linux users (including I) like to tweak things.

Pjotr.
