Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit

I'm using Hardy up-to-date and it seems to me that this bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/13905) is back: try to open twice the same text file, from nautilus or cli does not matter, and two instances of gedit will be launched.

More generally, in Hardy gedit seems to open each file in a new window even though the --new-window option is not used. Is this a bug or a change in behaviour?
In any case, this behaviour is creating a problem not only with same files opened many times, but also when trying to use xdvi and gedit for inverse search of .tex sources.

P.S. Sorry if I did the wrong thing reporting a new bug, but the old one had a fix committed status. What should one do in this case?

Hi Guido, thanks for your bug report. I am unable to reproduce this on an up-to-date Hardy. If I try to open to same file twice via the GUI or CLI, it just focuses the tab that the file is in, it does not open a new one anywhere. Do you have a different setting enabled that allows this?

In regards to your other question, this bug does not actually sound similar to the other bug. That bug is in regards to gedit not allowing two instances to be run, yours is almost the opposite if I understand correctly; it opens multiple instances when you don't want it to. It may be a side effect of the fix to that bug, however.

If you could provide me with some more details on how to reproduce this and if you agree that it is different from the bug you mentioned, I can help to move this bug along.

Thanks again for your contribution!

ok, it took me a while, but I managed to reproduce the bug with a vanilla hardy up-to-date (I did a fresh install): it happens with several window border themes.

To reproduce: for example change the default Human window border to Glider and then try to open twice a txt file.

Just an update: the issue still occurs with hardy up-to-date.
With many window border themes, gedit will open the same files multiple times.

I've got the same issue. Every opening of a .txt file, for example, opens a new instance of gedit. Hardy, up-to-date vanilla, AMD64.

I don't think it did this before, at least not two months ago?

how do you run gedit and open those txt?

hi Sebastien, I'm not sure your question was directed to me, but both clicking on the txt and invoking gedit from cli resulted in the same issue. The only thing that matters, in my case at least, is the window border theme.

could somebody describe easy steps to trigger the bug?

Guido Conaldi (guido-conaldi) wrote :

Ok Sebastien,

1. Customise your window theme so that your window border is the default 'Human'
2. In nautilus click on a text file so that it opens in gedit
3. Go back to nautilus and click again on the same text file. The first gedit window will get focus and no new copy of the file will be opened

4. Change your window border to another theme, such as Glider
5. In nautilus click on a text file so that it opens in gedit
6. Go back to nautilus and click again on the same text file. A new gedit window will be opened with a new copy of the text file and a warning saying that another copy of the file is already opened.

Glider is not the only window border theme that shows this behaviour. Neither opening the file in gedit from cli nor from the Recent Documents menu makes a difference. Nor does it using metacity or compiz.

As a side note, no matter what window border theme is in use, if you have a text file opened in gedit in workspace 1, go to workspace 2 and try to open it again, a new gedit instance with the usual warning will happear. Is this an intended behaviour?

confirmed, weird that the theme triggers the bug

I get the same problem on the latest Hardy Heron. I am using compiz with the Human Theme customized. if i click two text files from nautilus, they open in different windows instead of the same window, two tabs. really annoying.

a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, similarly new install of hardy, currently running xfce, and gedit does it's stuff in a new window. Is there a setting that normally switches between only tabs mode and window mode, or is tab mode just supposed to be the default and you have to individually specify to get it in a new window?

'cause perhaps messing with such a setting would allow those of us with this issue to deal with it until the default behavior gets consistent again.

What information do you need to reopen this?

I am on Ubuntu 11.04. If I start gedit on startup or from the panel, and then invoke gedit with a file from the CLI, it opens a new instance.
However, if I start gedit from the CLI, and then open a file from the CLI, the same instance is shared.
