Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

In Gusty Gibbon after saving the save button was greyed out - this was really useful because it meant that I knew the document had successfully saved and could be closed without fear of data loss.
In Hardy Heron beta this does not happen, the save button stays active after being pressed, even though pressing it again would do nothing. I really liked the way that openoffice greyed out the save button when no changes had been made to the document since the last save, please change it back.

Description: Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release: 8.04

This works properly in upstream 2.4.0 so verify before uploading the next Ubuntu release.

I have just upgraded to 2.4.0-3ubuntu1 and experienced still the same behaviour on Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 Beta KDE3.

This is a 'Feature' and was changed on purpose to work this way. The ooo-build version of OOo 2.4 implemented before upstream but it will be in all versions of OOo for version 3.0.0.

Oh by the way I attached the upstream bug report to this bug where they explicitly asked for it to start working this way.

I don't have a problem with the save button remaining active, but getting a dialog asking me to save changes when I close an unmodified document is still a bug.

I don't see that behavior here at least with openoffice.org writer (word processor). I opened a document and then closed it and it didn't ask me to save.

OpenOffice.org as distributed with Gutsy did the right thing: the save icon was greyed out on opening a document and after every commit, becoming lit on the first amending action. OpenOffice.org as distributed with Hardy always has the save icon lit. It seems rather bizarre that this error crept in and wasn't noticed.

The problem was caused by applying a patch to the ubuntu version of the 2.4 release that was intended for the 3.0 release and has since been reverted. As such the new broken behaviour will never occur in an official open office release - a much cleverer system is being implemented instead.
It will only occur in hardy and some of other distro versions.
Are we stuck with this behaviour for the LTS? It being post release now?

This is a "breaking change" that should be unbroken so I would have thought that an update was entirely in order -- especially as the current behaviour is so damn annoying :-)

So this "feature" is exclusive to the Hardy version of OOo? I'd definitely like it to be reverted as well--or at least offer me the option to allow the original, logical, behavior.

Max, what "cleverer" system is being implemented, pray tell? Thanks.

I also vote for Fevrin's suggestion of implementing an option to choose one's preferred behavior. There seem to be arguments for both (see http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/item/8487 ), so why not let people choose? I, personally, like the original "grey out" behavior better, since this little asterisk needs to be looked for whereas a greyed out button is an "eye catcher". And, if someone needs to write over an existing document, one can use the "save as" button.

It appears this will be fixed for OOo 3.1 upstream.

OOo 3.1.0 and OOo 3.2.0(Dev) upstream's have fixed the issue (although one wouldn't know it from 5226). When first opening an OOo Calc document the save icon is greyed out, it does not light up until an actual change is made (e.g., select cell & then Backspace).

(U)OOo 3.1.0 (PPA) Calc still opens a document with the save icon lit.

OOo 3.1.0:
$ cat /opt/openoffice.org/basis3.1/program/versionrc
[Version]
buildid=310m11(Build:9399)
OOOBaseVersion=3.1
OOOPackageVersion=3.1.0
ProductBuildid=9399
ProductMajor=310
ProductMinor=11
ProductSource=OOO310

OOo 3.2.0Dev:
$ cat /opt/ooo-dev/basis3.2/program/versionrc
[Version]
buildid=300m51(Build:9408)
OOOBaseVersion=3.2
OOOPackageVersion=3.2.0
ProductBuildid=9408
ProductMajor=300
ProductMinor=51
ProductSource=DEV300

(U)OOo 3.1.0:
$ cat /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/program/versionrc
[Version]
buildid=310m11(Build:9399)
OOOBaseVersion=3.1
OOOPackageVersion=3.1.0
ProductBuildid=9399
ProductMajor=310
ProductMinor=11
ProductSource=OOO310

$ apt-cache policy openoffice.org
openoffice.org:
  Installed: 1:3.1.0-5ubuntu1~jaunty1
  Candidate: 1:3.1.0-5ubuntu1~jaunty1
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.1.0-5ubuntu1~jaunty1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:3.0.1-9ubuntu3 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

Can this please be fixed to match the standard OOo (upstream) packages?

The situation is still as I reported in comment #13 and comment #14. The save icon opens and stays lit except for during the actual save process.

Tested in karmic:

[Version]
AllLanguages=en-US
BuildVersion=openoffice.org-core 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1, Thu Oct 22 20:13:41 UTC 2009

ProductSource=OOO310
UpdateID=OpenOffice.org_3_en-US
UpdateURL=
UpdateUserAgent=<PRODUCT> (${buildid}; ${_OS}; ${_ARCH}; BundledLanguages=${AllLanguages})
Vendor=Debian and Ubuntu

And with standard OOo (also in karmic):
$ cat /opt/openoffice.org/basis3.1/program/versionrc
[Version]
buildid=310m19(Build:9420)
OOOBaseVersion=3.1
OOOPackageVersion=3.1.1

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
