I have this problem in Ubuntu Karmic Beta, with Inkscape 0.47-rc3

The bug was already present in Ubuntu Jaunty. I can't get any font with symbols to
work, and I suspect that many others are not working either, although as I'm no
expert on fonts I don't if they don't work or if they are very similar to the standard
one.

Here go two snapshots of the problem. In the first, you can see that the
font is not correctly rendered on the menu. Then, the font, when applied,
is not correct either (on next comment)

Does the problem still occur with a recent Inkscape development version?

The bug title and description are a bit misleading. The font itself works perfectly. The symbols can be accessed via the Text>Glyphs dialog or entered directly with the unicode mode (Alt+U in the text tool).
The problem is that lots of characters or not implemented and thus rendered with a default font when used. It's the case on the canvas, and in the font list (samples should show implemented characters only).

Note that the same font also falls back to Sans when used in Gimp 2.6 (on canvas and in the preview).
