Binary package hint: gnomebaker
i was able to burn DVDs on ubuntu 7.10 , but after upgrading to Hardy it failed.
this is gnomebaker output:

I think I'm experiencing the same bug as you. On gentoo bug 217465 I've narrowed it down to being a regression between linux kernel 2.6.23.12 and 2.6.24.4. For me the error is 100% reproducible with kernel 2.6.24.4 and just is not there with kernel 2.6.23.12.
