Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image

I'm using:
* ii linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24-12.22
* PCMCIA UMTS Option card

When the card is inserted in the slot, nothing special happens. But after setting up an PPP connection, I do get random lock-ups, and I mean hard lock ups. The system does not respond to SysRq anymore.

Switching back to 2.6.22 kernel (Gutsy) the problem does not occur. More information and debugging information I don't have at this moment, but I'm willing to provide more information.

Below the messages from /var/log/syslog while inserting the card. Unfortunately no kernel panic or other logs in /var/log/syslog at the moment of the crash.

Hi Charles,

After inserting the card, care to capture and attach your entire dmesg output? Thanks.

I upgraded to the latest kernel, and problem/crash is still there:

ii linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic 2.6.24-15.26 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86/x86_64
ii linux-image-generic 2.6.24.15.17 Generic Linux kernel image

dmesg doesn't shown anything at the time of the crash.

There is only some logging in the file Xorg.0.log.old after the reboot:

<-- snap -->
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard0" (type: KEYBOARD)
(--) Mouse0: PnP-detected protocol: "ExplorerPS/2"
(II) Mouse0: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
SetClientVersion: 0 9
SetGrabKeysState - disabled
SetGrabKeysState - enabled
SetGrabKeysState - disabled
SetGrabKeysState - enabled
<-- snap -->

Please note that lockup only happens when there is an PPP connection using the Novatel Option UMTS/HSDPA card (PCMCIA).

btw, how can I add this bug to Hardy release view?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Leann,

I upgraded the machine to Intrepid fully, and running with the 2.6.27 kernel. The problem disappeared, but I don't know if it was the kernel which was the problem. It was more a combination of UMTS Option Card, Network Manager and Evolution. Of course, at the end there was a hard freeze, which shouldn't occur.
Problem seems to be solved, I'll test for a few more days.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for testing and the feedback. I'm going to tentatively mark this "Fix Released" for Intrepid. Feel free to reopen by setting the status back to "New" if this is not the case. Thanks.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
