Bug Description

Posted this on the ubuntu forums and was advised to repost here.

Tried connecting to an FTP server I use with a team of software developers. Upon connecting, I got: Nautilus cannot display "ftp://<email address hidden>:21/home/user". I am denied access to the homes directory, but can use my directory. According to a capture from wireshark, Nautilus tries to CWD through each directory in the path. For example:

cd /home
cd user

This generates an error:

550 /home: Permission denied.

Nautilus then disconnects.

I tried leaving the directory option blank, but Nautilus immediately CWDs to the root directory (ordinarily, I'm dropped in my home dir).

would be a gnome-vfs issue, it's not likely to be changed though since gvfs is used now

could you try if that's still an issue in hardy or intrepid?

I've since upgraded to Hardy and, yes, I still get the same error.

On Ubuntu 9.10, I am getting the same error trying to log into a Mac Leopard computer. Again the error seems to be that I do not have permissions to access all the files that Nautilus is parsing.

While the cwd to /home is not needed and should be avoided, this also seems to be a bug in the FTP server. In order to CWD to /home/user you must have execute permission in /home, which is also what should be needed to CWD to /home. Without read permission you can't LIST the /home directory, but you should be able to CWD there.

summary: - Nautilus ftp: permission denied
+ Nautilus ftp: permission denied while needlessly walking directory path

Also you might try changing the path to /~/ instead of /home/user/.
