Bug Description

after upgrading to hardy and logging in for the first time to kubuntu hardy (with kde 3.5.9) i noticed that ksplash was very weird (that is, black background and blue squares appearing periodically) so i went into systemsettings--> splash screen which returned the error that moodin wasn't installed.
sudo apt-get install ksplash-engine-moodin
fixed this (obviously) but it should not have gotten removed in the first place!

thank you for your time and for fixing this ... imagine the first impression one has when logging into the brand new desktop :-)

Re-installing ksplash-engine-moodin fixes the problem.

thank you samir for your comment. your proposed solution does work but I already knew that (see description). What I'm getting at here is that it should not be removed in the first place. That's why I'm reporting it as a bug (and not as a question as in how do i fix it?).

Thank you nevertheless for your time and your dedication :-)

This issue is not limited to upgrades - I recently did a fresh install of hardy beta and encountered the same issue.

wow didn't know it was such an issue that it even existed on fresh installs :S .. i guess that makes it a rather serious bug and a confirmed one on top of that!

We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

According to bug 254012, this is a KDE3 package which is obsolete for KDE4. Accordingly, it's not even included in Ubuntu 8.10.
Thanks in advance.

This was fixed before Hardy was released - I've done a number of installs and upgrades, none of them have encountered this issue.

No, it wasn't. I was hit by this bug two times in the past two weeks, both were gutsy->hardy upgrades.

I just did another upgrade, but this time symptoms were slightly different. ksplash-engine-moodin was downloaded but wasn't installed and there was no login splash screen at all. I had to instal moodin and select appropriate splash screen in system settings afterwards to get it back.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?

Daniel T Chen:

this is not reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04 afaik, no. but it still remains as a problem in 8.04. even though kubuntu (!) 8.04 is not a LTS release a lot of people will stick with it until they find kde4 usable (i know quite a few of them) so it would still be a great idea to fix this one. it's more than obvious that this is a bug so what do we need to do to fix it?

Just did a Gutsy to Hardy upgrade since Gutsy is now no longer supported, and this issue remains.

It doesn't matter whether this issue is "fixed" in 8.10 or 9.04 if people are upgrading to Hardy and will stick with that release. Indeed, since one has to upgrade to Hardy to upgrade beyond Hardy (unless, perhaps, they can upgrade from Hardy to the next LTS release, which is a trick I've yet to see carried out), I think it would be advantageous to fix Hardy, not to patch up the problem in some other release that the user might not get round to installing for quite some time.

Really? According to the following page, 8.04 is supported until April 2011 at the earliest:
