I cannot confirm on latest hardy. Creating and updating via kde-systemsettings is possible without problems.

The log included seem to indicate that the username includes a non-ascii character which can not be used. Could you please try the same with a username that has solely ascii characters and tell us if it still creates this error message.

Thanks

None of my users contain non-ascii character.
The system is a fresh install and the 2 users on the systems are :
- "fabrice" (created during the kubuntu installation)
- "joanna" (created using useradd when I saw that the screen was not working)

Moreover, I have the error not only when I try to update but also when I try to create a user. In this last case, It can not be an issue with the user name : the screen is not displayed, so I can not even enter the user name.

I am running a french version of kubuntu. If it is a character encoding issue, it is maybe coming from there. I know at least one more French user that has reported the same error on the ubuntu-fr.org forum.
