Bug Description

Yesterdays daily 6th and todays noble daily (rebuilt) 7th both boot directly to the login screen rather than to the desktop.

I have an ISO from the 2nd Feb (or possibly the 1st) where there were no issues.

I cannot login via "ubuntu-budgie" - no password via the login screen nor via a TTY so I can't see any journalctl logs etc.

Any ideas what may have changed? Something to-do with the glib transitions happening at the moment?

Virtualbox boot - 4GB memory, 128MB virtual graphics (no 3d acceleration), 40GB virtual HDD 2 virtual cores

ok - I cannot reproduce the ability to boot with both AMD graphics and intel graphics on two separate pieces of tin. Exactly the same observation as virtualbox is seen. So I'm not convinced this is a graphics driver issue.

Pressing escape immediately after grub i can see messages like:

overlayfs: null uuid detected in lower fs '/', falling back to xino=off,index=off,nfs_export=off
....

passwd: user 'ubuntu-budgie' does not exist

very early in the boot sequence.

I also tested this on both QEMU/KVM and on hardware (Intel CPU and GPU PC). I could reproduce the issue as well, Ubuntu Budgie boots on login page instead of desktop.

On my QEMU/KVM I tested display Spice and VNC, no change.

Also affects Edubuntu and Ubuntu Studio. Edubuntu boots to a "Welcome" screen that it shouldn't with a default GNOME screen, while Ubuntu Studio boots to a blank black screen, repeating issues where it is not getting a user via casper as before.

Looks like it might be a debian-cd issue after recent changes there.

Also getting similar messages to comment #5 above:

```
passwd: user 'edubuntu' does not exist
```
passwd: user 'ubuntu-studio' does not exist

This to me indicates that casper doesn't know what to do because the boot parameters don't indicate a layered file system.

Specifically these commits seem to have affected the builds:

Testing the Ubuntu Studio image, adding `layerfs-path=standard.live.squashfs` before `--- quiet splash` solved the problem, so the commit in debian-cd is indeed the problem.

This commit needs to be reverted.

Thanks for the pointer - for UB its
layerfs-path=minimal.standard.live.squashfs as per that commit that
allows the desktop to fire-up correctly

We forgot the mkdir -p invocation. Simple, one-line fix.

The tag foundations-todo is supposed to be added by the Foundations team
when they've created a card in JIRA for it. By adding the tag now you
may prevent the card from actually being created so I am removing the
tag. rls-XX-incoming is enough to get the Foundations team attention.
