unable to get to desktop after log in

Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 6 Hardy herron
ATI x1650
Viewsonic VX2235WM

8.04 natively supports my Monitor now this is fantastic. however if I install either the FGLRX or the Ati Cat drivers I get a strange display issue

it loads up and I can log in but the screen goes white and it never loads the desktop.

it loads failsafe just fine. if I uninstall the drivers I can log in normally.

I've got the same problem. The worst part is, I have 2 of these cards, a 256 meg x1650 and a 512 meg x1650 pro. They both kick butt in Vista but I can't even get desktop effects in Ubuntu (Gutsy or Hardy April 11 daily). I've tried installing these drivers from every angle I can find, Synaptic, manually, envy and tried every tip I could find and I always end up with the same white screen.

I've got the same problem on Ubuntu 8.04 with ATI 8.04 and 8.05 :(

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

it seemed to be fixed in the 8.04 release.
