When trying to install mfc9169lpr on Ubuntu Ubuntu hardy (development branch) beta

Thanks for your bug report! Unfortunately, you are right. This behavior is not really great so we recently took the decision to remove transitional packages like mfc9160lpr from ubuntu repositories to avoid that kind of problems. mfc9160lpr packages does not contains drivers, it is in fact a link to the brother- lpr-drivers- laser1 package which is the right one you need to have your printer working ( and brother- cups-wrapper- laser1 ).
Note : The laser1 packages are known to not work yet, maybe you can wait for the packages to get updated in the next days before you try to install your printer again.
