Thanks for posting this bug report to help make Ubuntu better.

Which version of Ubuntu are you running?

In addition to the information you provided, could you also provide the following as separate attachments?

~/.xsession-errors file
 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
 the output of lspci -vvnn

Also, see if this bug persists with the default settings. To restore defaults, launch compiz-config-manager in it and then go to "Preferences" (left bottom corner) and click on the "Reset to defaults" button. Post your memory usage with these default settings.

This information will help solve this problem.

I would also like to add Ubuntu 7.10 with default settings as having this issue as well. The compiz.real thread was eatting ~50% of 512MB of ram. It is a recent install, default "Normal" 3D settings, fully updated from the default repositories (did not enable backports or pre-release). I will attach the same files as requested above. The system has an uptime of:
11:38:57 up 1 day, 20:18, 2 users, load average: 1.01, 0.99, 0.60
Basically, it hasn't been shutdown since the install/update finished and has been idle for ~36 hours. I noticed the massive memory usage due to the system monitor in my bar, seeing the swap space near fully used. Top revealed the culprit as compiz.real.

Thanks for the updates and information!

I've changed Status to confirmed. There seems to be enough information for the developers here.

Craig Magina also confirmed he has the same problem.

If either of you get any more information abotu this bug please add it here.

Craig, which version of Ubuntu are you running?

I'm getting the exact same issue on 9.04. I'll attach the files requested above. If there's anything else I can upload, please ask. It's making system response sporadically *awful*.
