Bug Description

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 as of Monday March 17 at 4:37pm

The Samsung 206BW monitor is not detected properly. My monitor is connected via the DVI interface and the video card is an 6600GT with dual DVI digital outputs. The monitor runs in digital mode. I installed Hardy 8.04 via mini.iso dated 10-Mar-2008 18:03 9.5M at this location: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso

The monitor simply shows up as a genric monitor and does not support the native resolution of 1680x1050@60. When trying to correct this via screens&graphics and then selecting the monitor Samsung 206BWDigital and ticking the widescreen box then program says to logout before changes will take affect. But the monitor is still not able to display at 1680x1050@60.

Same behavior with me! I use this monitor as external device for my notebook with intel 945 chipset video using VGA. The right resolution 1680x1050 is not recognized.

Hi ubuntusucks,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Yes, till exists. Native resolution not provided by "Screen Resolution" application.
Tested with Ubuntu 8.10.

I attach the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Sorry, don't understand. This thread is about the external TFT Samsung 206BW. No matters wether you connect it to a desktop or laptop.

sorry guys, i did not recognize this was a device-specific bug only dealing that very samsung display. i am dealing with other hardware but have the same problem of not being offered the 1680x1050 resolution.

i am gonna file a new report for my bug.

I'm having the same problem but with a Samsung 2053bw.

I can only set the resolution to 1360x768@60 with the screen resolution application.

guys, the original bug report was with nvidia, and those who are plugging it to a laptop should not be interested in this bug. The monitor uses the same resolution as the panel on the laptop by default, so there's nothing unusual about it. You just need _not_ to use cloned mode, but then you also might lose acceleration because of hardware limitations.

Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with the upstream development speed for -nouveau, and hope
this will translate into swifter bug fixes as well.

Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking
it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we
do not have further plans to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like
to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it
upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
