Thank you for the bug report. However, I can't reproduce this at an up to date hard amd64 installation.
Could you please post your architecture and the output of:
ls -A /usr/share/hwtest/install
Thanks.
(PS, reinstalling hwtest could also work, type first apt-get clean.)

You'll only be able to reproduce this if hwtest isn't already installed.

This is definitely a bug, just from code inspection. The config script is not allowed to use anything from the package's own filesystem tree, because when preconfiguration is run the package has not yet been unpacked. A config script is only allowed to make use of essential packages and of debconf itself.

The script being run would work OK if it were copied as the package's config script and had its arguments suitably hardwired, I think.

Now I can confirm it personally. Just the line is different.
My version is the latest amd64 hardy heron, fresh installed with help of the debootstrap copy of hardy, schroot and a gutsy livecd.

An addititon: the whole /usr/share/hwtest directory doesn't exist. It seems like the installation is trying to execute the script before the files are actually copied to their place.
