Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

On one of my machines (32-bit Hardy Install) Firefox will often disappear for no apparent reason. I don't know how to steadily reproduce this bug, sometimes it disappears, sometimes not, but never when I want it to.

I could be watching a video on Youtube, or writing a blog post on Myspace and it all of a sudden just completely disappears.

Steps to reproduce:

1.) Just browse normally.
2.) Firefox may or may not disappear while you're using it.

This bug used to be very frequent with Firefox2. I'm hoping that this gets fixed soon, it's a very annoying issue.

I asked my wife to run Firefox from a terminal for a while, and when the problem happened most recently we captured input. Here is what we seen in the terminal window when it crashed. We think that it may be related to the fact she doesn't have sound in Firefox at all but does have sound with every other application:

Has any one found how to stop this?

I run Ubuntu/8.04 Firefox/3.0.4

I can walk away from my computer,
and when I return, firefox has disappeared.

I'd love to stop it

Nope, no fixes or work-arounds have appeared yet. Guess there's some head-scratching going on.

Does Firefox allow a 'Restore Previous Session' when this occurs?

When I relaunch Firefox, I do get a restore previous session option.

I am also experiencing a serious problem with Firefox disappearing, for me, in Firefox 3.0.3. I think it's the same problem as is afflicting everyone else. Allow me to clarify the nature of the problem.

When viewing a video in Youtube, either whilst I am watching the video, or whilst the video is playing music whilst I'm working elsewhere in the room, or when a loaded video is simply paused and ready to play, the Youtube screen portal will for no apparent reason simply vanish.

There is no warning, no other activity on or off the screen, and no apparent explanation. Firefox remains open, and remains at the page which had previously been displaying the content which I had been viewing. However, the video section of the Youtube webpage simply vanishes and turns to the same shade of white as the rest of the background of the Youtube webpage. The problem is mystifying!

And yes, this only happens with Youtube in Firefox. It has never happened with any other website or application. And just to clarify, my sound works perfectly in Firefox.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem, which appears to be so widespread, and what can be done to fix it?

Also, are all the people who are experiencing this problem, also experiencing it in a Ubuntu Linux environment?

Pips complaint about video in youtube is not related to this bug

Should I start a new thread for my specific Youtube flash bug within Firefox?

I can confirm that it is still happening, even after updating to Firefox 3.0.8.

Please advise.
