Firefox doesn't export URL

Bug Description

I have installed the extension in firefox 2.0.0.12. After restarting it several times, it doesn't export any URL, the file currentURL is not even created.

Is there a way I can debug the extension to help you figure out what's going on?

Could you install this version of the extension? I've added try/catch blocks everywhere to pop up alerts when anything goes wrong. It may get very annoying, depending on how often the error occurs, but please try it and report any messages you get.

Are you still having problems? Do you need a different way to debug it? If you or someone else is having this problem, I consider it a fairly major bug.

It wasn't working for me with the 63 branch either (everything was Unknown URL) but I installed the extension above and its working nicely now since the addon update. FF 3b4 on Ubuntu gutsy.

Having enjoyed a few hours now of having the ff plugin work right I'm starting to think I liked it better when it didn't. Now I have hundreds of untagged web site items in my rescuetime page. How likely is it that we could get a checkbox or a config file somewhere that would let us turn off web page reporting?

On a side note, I'm running linux exclusively so I dont know how the windows app works. Are the files opened in a particular application supposed to show up as "(Extended info: )" as well? For example if I'm editing a file in OO should the file name show up in the logs and the dashboard?

I'm having problems with the gnome applets as well. If you are monitoring these bug reports I can add some more if you like.

Definitely submit any bugs you have with any part of the application. I honestly don't have much free time these days, but I will try to work on them when I can.

On the web page reporting issue, the Windows program has a "whitelist" feature that I believe allows you to only report certain websites. I'll have to research how that option modifies the uploaded logs to implement that. I usually just leave everything I haven't spent more than a couple of minutes on untagged, and the dashboard groups it into the "other/untagged" bar.

The extended info is currently not used for anything but websites, although I believe there are plans to extend it to include files from other apps (like the OpenOffice example you mentioned). I've made it possible in the Linux version to change the application name via extensions - for example, my gnome-terminal in Ubuntu 7.10 shows its title as "username@hostname:dir", so I wrote an extension that pulls the hostname from that title and sets the reported application name to "ssh to hostname" if I've ssh'd somewhere. If you're interested in something like that for OO or another app that displays the filename in the title, it would not be hard to write something.

Just tried the debugging version above (https://bugs.launchpad.net/rescuetime-linux-uploader/+bug/203112/comments/1) and that also seems to work for me.

Same thing here. Also, the extension caused several of my other Firefox extensions to stop working, namely SearchStatus and the Web Developer Toolbar. Disabling the RescueTime extension got them to work again. I've just installed the debugging version above and it seems to be working so far.

I've got the same issue as the OP, but the debug version fixed it. Let me know if you want debug information so you can narrow down this problem.

I think the problem has something to do with the compiling instructions. I follow those - like everybody here probably - and then the extension (v63.3) that is generated does not work.
Your debugging version of the same extension (also v63.3) DOES work, so there's an actual functionality difference between the two. While browsing google earlier, I came across someone saying that you needed to do something extra, on top of the steps described in the firefox extension tutorial. I think it was the execution of a few extra "make" commands somewhere.

I attached the xpi file that is generated if you follow the instructions in the readme file. Maybe you can compare the two and see if there are other differences besides the debugging info.

Confirmed. Compiling the extension per the instructions does not work. Using the debug version above works.
